What is SharePoint?

SharePoint is the Microsoft strategy for helping small businesses, departments or large enterprises to streamline their business processes traditionally supported by file system shares and static intranets. The technology provides a collection of services that you can use to create private, team-oriented web sites to share information and encourage collaboration with other users on documents. It can be accessed via a normal web browser.

Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) consists of free components. The enterprise components are available in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) product, which builds on the Windows SharePoint Services foundation and expands it in a way that is beneficial to larger companies, enterprise deployments, and portal scenarios.

Branding

The technology allows the organisation to brand the portal and/or team sites to discern ownership. All departments within the organisation can have their own permanent space that can be divided into areas and sub-areas of information. These areas are fully customisable with a unique look-and-feel. Publishing of targeted content

Roles can be assigned so that editors need to approve content created by authors before the content is published. These information owners can control what content reaches who and in what timeframe the information is available. Information can be stored in files, documents, pictures, lists, contacts, announcements, events, tasks, issues, calendars, surveys and discussions. The information display format is totally customisable.



Search and Find

A search engine is available that allows users to quickly discover information of interest to them. Users can bookmark areas and easily setup email notifications to alert them when information changes occur.

All this is available "out-of-the-box" with no development required. It is easy to configure and maintain and is highly customisable. SharePoint Portal Server is a safe, secure, well supported Microsoft product that integrates well with existing enterprise products such as Outlook, Active Directory and Biztalk.
